Major highlights:
- Three Duke teams earned #1 national rankings during the season -- women's basketball, women's golf and men's basketball. Six other teams achieved a ranking of #6 or better -- field hockey (2), women's lacrosse (2), women's tennis (4), men's tennis (4), men's lacrosse (5) and women's soccer (6).
- The football and wrestling teams were selected as winners of the ACC Sportsmanship awards.
- Four Blue Devils were awarded the 2004 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarships -- Leigh Anne Hardin, Alex Wade, Brent Warner and Virada Nirapathpongporn.
- Six Duke student-athletes were awarded the 2004 ACC Top Six for Service Award -- Luke Bayer (football), Mike Castelforte (golf), Kim Gogola (field hockey), Lindsey Harding (basketball), Arielle Linderman (volleyball) and Bryan Unkeless (swimming).
- Sheela Agrawal and Brent Warner were two of only 29 students to earn NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.
- Fifteen teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament action with the field hockey and men's basketball teams advancing to the Final Four.
- Duke had five individuals earn ACC Championships -- Adam Benitez (wrestling), Frank Cornely (wrestling), Levi Craig (wrestling), Brittany Lang (golf), Katie Ness (swimming) and Christian Smith (wrestling).
- The women's basketball and women's golf teams won ACC Tournament Championships, while the men's basketball, women's basketball and women's lacrosse teams earned ACC Regular Season titles.
Awards and recognition:
- Duke boasted 26 All-America selections, two National Players of the Year and one National Coach of the Year.
- In the ACC, the Blue Devils dominated the awards as Duke notched 59 All-ACC selections, two Players of the Year, two Rookies of the Year, four Coaches of the Year and one ACC Tournament MVP.
- Ten Duke athletes were selected Academic All-America.
- Senior women's basketball player Alana Beard received the Wooden Award, State Farm Wade Trophy, Associated Press, USBWA and ESPN.com National Player of the Year awards.
- Sophomore women's golfer Liz Janangelo won the Golfweek, NGCA and Golfstat Cup as the National Player of the Year.
- Freshman Brittany Lang became the second Duke golfer selected as NGCA National Freshman of the Year.
- Men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski was named the Claire Bee National Coach of the Year, marking the ninth time he has won national coach of the year honors.
- Clar Anderson (wrestling), Dan Brooks (women's golf), Gail Goestenkors (women's basketball) and Kerstin Kimel (women's lacrosse) were named ACC Coaches of the Year.
Faculty and staff appointments:
- Ted Roof was named head football coach.
- Tom Knotts (assistant coach), Marty Galbraith (offensive coordinator), David Kelly (associate head coach), Jerry Azzinaro (co-defensive coordinator) and Glenn Spencer (assistant head coach) were named to the football staff, while Scott Brown was promoted to co-defensive coordinator.
- Jon Jackson and Mike Sobb were promoted to assistant athletic directors.
School statistics:
- Duke gave out 233.78 athletics scholarships to 318 athletes for the 2003-04 year.
