Major highlightsThe divinity school announced plans in spring 2006 for its doctor of theology degree program. The Center for Reconciliation was launched with a series of seminars and discussions during the divinity school’s annual Convocation & Pastors’ School in fall 2005. The school dedicated its 53,000-square-foot addition-and-renovation project, including the Westbrook Building and Goodson Chapel, in October 2005. Gifts totaled nearly $15 million, including several new major endowed scholarship funds. Awards and recognitionDavid Steinmetz, Amos Ragan Kearns Professor of the History of Christianity, was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He also received career honors from The American Society of Church History. Richard Lischer, James T. and Alice Mead Cleland Professor of Preaching, and Ellen Davis, professor of Bible and practical theology, were awarded Louisville Institute Christian Faith and Life Grants to support their research and writing. J. Kameron Carter, assistant professor in theology and black church studies, received a year-long fellowship from the National Humanities Center. Geoffrey Wainwright, Robert Earl Cushman professor of Christian theology, was awarded the Johannes Quasten Medal for outstanding faculty by The Catholic University of America. Special programs or achievementsIn partnership with The Duke Endowment in spring 2006, the school developed “Thriving Rural Communities,” a program to foster strong rural churches in North Carolina by addressing various challenges and cultivating excellent leadership. The divinity school conducted a 14-part series of sermons, called “Art as Evangelism,” in fall 2005 to celebrate art as an expression of faith. Faculty and staff appointmentsL.
