Appointments
Pamela Bernard succeeded David Adcock as vice president and general counsel of Duke University, effective July 1, 2006. She comes to Duke from the University of Florida, where she was vice president and general counsel.
Christopher Simmons was named associate vice president for federal relations in January 2006. A former associate director for government relations at the American Council on Education, he replaces Nan Nixon, who retired in 2005.
Gwynn T. Swinson, a cabinet secretary of Gov. Mike Easley and NC’s chief administrative officer, was selected in January 2006 as a new vice president of government and community affairs and external relations at Duke University Medical Center and Health System.
Doug Vinsel, chief operating officer at WakeMed Health and Hospitals, was selected as CEO of the 186-bed Duke Raleigh Hospital in January 2006. He had served WakeMed as chief operating officer and executive vice president since 1984. Vinsel succeeds Jim Knight.
Jo Rae Wright, a cell biologist and physiologist who served since 2002 as vice dean of basic science at the School of Medicine, was named dean of the university’s Graduate School and vice provost, effective July 1, 2006. She succeeds Lewis Siegel, dean since 1991, who has retired.
Anne Yoder, professor of biology who joined the Duke faculty Aug. 1, 2005, succeeded William Hylander, a professor of biological anthropology and anatomy, as director of the Duke University Primate Center, now the Duke Lemur Center.
Seven new members of the Duke University Board of Trustees began their terms on July 1, 2005: Thomas Clark T’69 of Litchfield County, CT, president of the Duke Alumni Association; Robin Ferracone T’75 of Los Angeles, CA, partner at Mercer Human Resource Consulting; Kenneth Hubbard T’65 of Greenwich, CT, executive vice president of Hines, an international real estate company; David Rubenstein T’70 of Washington, D.C., managing director of The Carlyle Group; Robert Saunders G’06 of Durham, a young trustee; Alan D. Schwartz T’72 of Greenwich, CT, president and co-chief operating officer of the Bear Stearns Companies, Inc.; and Anthony Vitarelli T’05 of Marlton, NJ, a young trustee.
