By the numbers
Trinity College comprises 5,448 students from 50 states and 52 countries. Eighteen percent of these students are Asian/Pacific Islander, 11 percent are African American, 7 percent are Hispanic/Latina/Latino, and 5 percent are international students.
Highlights
DukeEngage, a $30-million civic engagement project, was announced.
“A Duke Conversation” events featuring President Brodhead, students, and faculty were held in major U.S. cities.
The Class of 2011, which is expected to include 1,715 students, is Duke’s most diverse ever.
The French Science Center, named for the family of trustee Melinda French Gates T'86 B'87, opened.
Awards and recognition
Jonathan Mattingly (mathematics) received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.
R. Larry Todd (music) and Laurie Shannon (English) both received Guggenheim fellowships.
John Hope Franklin received the John W. Kluge Prize for the Study of Humanity.
Robert Bryant Jr. (mathematics) received an award from the National Academy of Sciences.
Charles Salmen was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship.
Brandon Levin was awarded a Churchill Scholarship.
Andy Cunningham was awarded a Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
Jimmy Soni was awarded a Mitchell Scholarship.
Elizabeth Forwand was awarded a Luce Scholarship.
Felicia Walton was awarded a Marshall Scholarship.
Faculty and staff appointments
Janie Long D’81 was appointed director of the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life.
Tony Brown was appointed director of the Robertson Scholars Program.
Sandra Connolly was named finance dean of Arts & Sciences.
Major gifts
Over 50 new scholarships were created as part of the Financial Aid Initiative, including endowments of $1 million or more:

Arts and Sciences received $1 million for the Hung-Taiwan Graduate Fellowship.
Arts and Sciences received a $2.2-million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for Visual Culture.
