By the numbers
The Divinity School has approximately 530 students from 41 states and eight foreign countries enrolled. The school employs 44 full-time faculty.
Highlights
In 2006-2007, the Divinity School matriculated its first class of the Doctor of Theology program.
The school hosted “Charles Wesley at 300,” a three-day conference celebrating Wesley’s life and work. The school also hosted George Carey, former archbishop of Canterbury and Elias Chacour, archbishop of Galilee (Israel) of the Melkite Catholic Church.
In November 2006 the School’s Center for Reconciliation convened a gathering of more than 40 Christian leaders in Africa to develop strategies for focusing the church’s work in addressing issues and conflicts such as genocide, civil war, and AIDS.
The Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life, based at the Divinity School, hosted two major conferences, one in partnership with the Presbyterian Church USA and one focused on Jewish traditions in end-of-life care.
The school received a seven-year, $12-million grant from The Duke Endowment to focus on improving clergy health in North Carolina.
Awards and recognition
Timothy Tyson, visiting professor of American Christianity and Southern culture, won the 2007 Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion, which includes a $200,000 prize.

Faculty and staff appointments
Kenneth L. Carder was promoted to Ruth W. and A. Morris Williams Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry.
Mark Chaves was appointed professor of sociology, religion, and divinity.
Edgardo Colon-Emeric was appointed assistant research professor of theology and Hispanic studies, and director of the Hispanic Studies Program.
Mary McClintock Fulkerson was promoted to professor of theology.
Stephen Gunter was appointed associate dean for Methodist studies and research professor of evangelism and Wesleyan studies.
Amy Laura Hall was promoted to associate professor of Christian ethics.
Robin Swift was appointed director of clergy health initiatives.
Jeremy Troxler was appointed director of the Thriving Rural Communities program.
Laceye Warner was promoted to associate professor of the practice of evangelism and Methodist studies, and Royce and Jane Reynolds Teaching Fellow.
Lauren Winner was appointed assistant professor of Christian spirituality.
Major gifts
The Divinity School received gifts of $12.5 million in cash during the 2007 fiscal year, including $573,000 for the Annual Fund and more than $2 million for Duke University’s Financial Aid Initiative.
